The high cost of fuel and going to rallies

I have talked with many people in the past few days and the conservation always leads to which rallies they plan on attending in 2008. The sad thing is that I have heard many of them say they are not going to some rallies because the cost of fuel versus the show up pay does not equal out.
So to keep the pilots happy and wanting to make the drive to their event, people are wanting more for show up to come to the event. Companies and sponsers shell out money for this event to happen. In return they usually get 2 balloon rides for the event. These companies are hoping that with their sponsership that a certain number of balloons will attend the rally. With the cost of fuel rising and balloonists not wanting to make the trip, it makes it harder for the event organizer to find replacements to come to the event.
So the question that I have is with the high cost of fuel and some balloonists already expressing that they will not attend the rally this year because of the cost, could the high cost of fuel be harmful to our sport?
Please take a few minutes to comment.

I think that was the main reason that we got out of ballooning. Back when gas was $1.50 a gallon, we had a $1,000.00 gas bill for one month. When the gas price started to raise over $1.50 is about the time when used balloon prices started to dropped and the used market went from a seller's market to a buyer's market. First we quit the rallies that were very long distant such as Boise and Coeur d'Alene.Eventually we got both balloons sold and dumped the van which got 10 mph pulling a trailer.
